In my youth I was interested in American Football but I soon found my chosen sport and went on to win a gold medal in it at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games.

I ended my amatuer career with a record of 22 wins and 4 loses. I lost twice to Clay Hodges.

I turned professional in 1969. In 1970 I won all 12 of my bouts, 11 by knock out.

In 1973 I beat Joe Frazier in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.

In 1994 at age 45 I became the oldest man ever to win the heavyweight boxing title.

I have earned substantially more money from endorsing cooking equipment than I ever made in the boxing ring.

In that same year I was diagnosed with cancer.

In 1999 I won for the first time the French cycling event to which my name would become most closely associated.

I have won the Tour De France in seven consecutive years, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005.
